Breastfeeding is slowly becoming the norm. How?
Breastfeeding is how nature intended moms to feed their children. A number of people, to date, still think that breastfeeding is not the best for babies, though.
Breastfeeding is slowly becoming the norm. Beyond the savings from infant formula, studies show a lot of benefits for both the mom and the baby. Hence, a lot more moms choose to breastfeed their babies up to two years of age, some would even go beyond.
Breastfeeding boosts baby’s optimal brain development, protects baby from a long list of illnesses, protects the baby from developing allergies, reduces risk of ear infections and gastroenteritis, obesity, SIDS, certain types of cancers and the list goes on.
As for the mom, breastfeeding can help her lose pregnancy weight faster. It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size faster and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth. It also reduces a mom’s stress level and lowers the risk of postpartum depression. It also lowers the rates of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. These are just to name a few.
Aside from these benefits, what could have influenced more Filipino moms to breastfeed? Believe me, breastfeeding is not an easy task. It is a commitment.
Social media could have played a big part on this trend. How? There are couple of online support groups solely dedicated for breastfeeding, such as Breastfeeding Pinays (the biggest breastfeeding support group in the Philippines), Expressers Pumping Moms PH, Expressing/Breastfeeding moms and Exclusive Pumping Mums. These support groups focus on awareness of breastfeeding benefits, encouraging moms and empowering them and helping to normalize breastfeeding. Certain moms who go on extended breastfeeding also share their stories on the said groups that consequently, challenges others to do the same way, too.
But what played the major role in spreading the breastfeeding trend are the celebrities. These icons are proud breastfeeding mamas and would promote them on their social media accounts such as Marian Rivera, Bianca Gonzalez, Iya Villania, Mariel Rodriguez, Ruffa Mae Quinto, Jolina Magdangal and Neri Naig.
Women follow their pregnancy story, birthing story up until how they play the motherhood part. Women of the society look up to them, they see them as good examples and would opt to do what their icons do.
Organizations get them as endorsers to make their brand known. We would then buy these stuffs because we saw these products on advertisements being used by our icons. We wanted to have the same thing that they have.
Now, can you just imagine these well-known celebs all endorsing the same thing, breastfeeding. The result, it is slowly becoming widely accepted. They have successfully set the trend with the help of social media.
